Vitamin C and the misunderstanding of it have been in the health community for a long time. When you grab most vitamin C supplements and look at the label it will say Vitamin C as ascorbic acid or something similar to that. First of all ascorbic acid is not Vitamin C. It is only the protective layer of the Vitamin C complex, just like an eggshell. But the ascorbic acid that is labeled as natural i...s actually a derivative from petroleum.
The problem is that the body is nourished by food or whole food supplements, not fractionated or partial vitamin complexes. Vitamin C is actually composed of P factors which give the vascular system integrity. The P factors are more present in Buckwheat. So we use C from Buckwheat in case where the vascular system is compromised such as varicose veins or hemorrhoids. It also contains K factors which promote prothrombin for blood clotting, and J factors which help the blood to carry oxygen which is need when one has a cold or other illness. In addition it has Tyrosinase which is an adrenal activator and the best measurement of how potent Vitamin C actually is.
The natural name tag on Vitamin C with ascorbic acid is a misnomer. It has no meaning at all. When one would take a product that just has ascorbic acid the problem is that the body needs the other co factors mentioned above in order to work. Since they are not present in the supplement the body will take the rest of the complex out of the tissues of the body. In the long term this of course causes a problem by causing deficiencies in those co factors.
Look at your supplement. If it has ascorbic acid or has a high level of milligrams you then know this is not the supplement to take. Almost every patient I see is taking this form in either a Vitamin C tablet or a Multivitamin. I always take them off and replace it with a form of Vitamin C that the body can use.
